Montfleury district, Cannes: the Gallia, pool and park
The short answer
Montfleury is a residential district of Cannes, up the hill east of the station. It is home to the Gallia, a casino built in 1888, turned into a hotel in 1901 and a residence in 1959, and to the Parc Montfleury, a municipal complex with a pool and tennis courts. From the apartment, the pool is six minutes on foot, the station nine, rue d’Antibes 400 metres and the Palais des Festivals 1.3 km.
The Gallia, from the casino des Fleurs to the residence
The casino des Fleurs was built in 1888 by Louis Hourlier, the town architect of Cannes. It had an Italian style theatre with a horseshoe balcony, and a garden whose large oval lawn, planted with shrubs and palm trees, is described by the heritage inventory.
Lacking success, the casino was turned into a hotel by the Cannes architects Jules Stoecklin and his son Henri, who kept its theatre. Work began in September 1899, and the Hôtel Gallia opened on 20 January 1901, in a resolutely Art Nouveau style.
In 1959 the building was pulled down and rebuilt as a residence: today’s Résidence Gallia, at 27 boulevard Montfleury, set in a large park. The history of the site is documented by the general heritage inventory of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region.
The Parc Montfleury, municipal pool and tennis
465 metres from the apartment, six minutes on foot, the Parc Montfleury is a municipal sports and leisure complex. Its pool, at 19 avenue Beauséjour, has a 25 by 12.5 metre basin with a retractable roof and five swimming lanes, a fun pool with jets and geysers, a paddling pool, a sun terrace and 1,000 m² of lawn.
The pool is accessible to people with reduced mobility, and children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult in swimwear. The bus stop is called Parc Montfleury, and 50 parking spaces with two free hours are close by.
The Montfleury tennis club is part of the same park: seven courts, six of them floodlit, three clay and four synthetic, a clubhouse and a tennis school for ages 4 to 17. Opening hours and rates are on the City of Cannes website.
Staying in Montfleury
Montfleury is a residential district up the hill: the walk down to the Croisette is easy, and the climb back in the evening is the price of the quiet. Rue d’Antibes and its shops are 400 metres away, the beaches 700 metres, the station 700 metres or nine minutes on foot, and the Palais des Festivals 1.3 km.
The apartment is in the Résidence Gallia: four guests, a terrace over the gardens and a parking space included. The municipal Montfleury surface car park also gives two free hours once a day, Monday to Saturday.
