When to visit Cannes

The short answer

In Cannes the date that matters is not the weather but the Palais des Festivals. A four day trade show takes the whole week in accommodation, arrivals and departures included, and rates follow. The table below covers the next twelve months: months marked busy carry at least one show, months marked quiet carry none. Every date comes from the organisers’ official sites.

How to read this table

  • A busy month carries at least one trade show. Book early, expect higher rates across the whole show week, and check availability before buying a flight.

  • A quiet month carries no show at the Palais des Festivals. That is when Cannes is best to visit and cheapest to rent, the town being a seaside resort open all year.

  • The occupied days column counts the days of that month actually covered by a show. A show straddling two months appears in both, with only its share of each.

Summer, the one long window with no show

July and August carry no show at the Palais des Festivals. This is the holiday season, when the terrace and the beaches 700 m away serve their real purpose, and the one long window in the Cannes calendar. Demand is high for a different reason than trade shows, so the same advice applies: book early and plan several nights.

Questions that come up

When is the best time to visit Cannes?
It depends what you are after. For the beach and the terrace, July and August, which are also the only two months with no show at the Palais des Festivals. For a quiet town and lower rates, the show free months outside summer. To avoid crowds and show week rates, check the verified calendar before fixing your dates: a four day show takes the whole week in accommodation.
When is Cannes busiest?
May, with the Festival de Cannes and its twelve days, the longest stretch in the calendar. Then March with MIPIM and June with Cannes Lions. Autumn runs TFWA World Exhibition, MIPCOM, MAPIC then ILTM back to back, which holds the town from late September to early December.
Do you need to book far ahead in Cannes?
During a show week, yes, and several months ahead: demand far exceeds supply and places with parking go first. Outside show weeks, lead times are those of an ordinary seaside resort, tighter in July and August.
Is Cannes worth visiting off season?
The town stays open all year and the show free months are the most pleasant to walk: the Croisette, Le Suquet and rue d’Antibes without the crowds. The Montfleury district is residential and fifteen minutes on foot from the centre, which suits off season as much as summer.
